The township of New Norcia lies 130 km north of Perth, the capital of Western Australia and is Australia's only fully working monastic town. New Norcia was founded by Spanish Benedictine monks in 1846 and was named after Norcia in Italy, the birthplace of St Benedict. There is much to see in this self-sufficient monastery enclave. New Norcia is replete with spectacular examples of early Australian history and heritage and a mix of Spanish-style architecture. Attractions include a local history museum, an art gallery housing the largest collection of religious art in the country, a Heritage Trail, an old police station and goal and an always busy monastery shop.
New Norcia is a popular tourist destination and a comfortable 90-minute drive from Perth, along a scenic sealed road.
Various options for overnight accommodation are available. The New Norcia Guesthouse is open to tourists and visitors and to anyone curious to know more about this unique little town. Comfortable single and twin guest rooms are available along with all meals.
Established in 1927 and surrounded by bush architecture, the New Norcia Hostel is a practical expression of the Benedictine tradition of hospitality. Accommodation in the hostel is available to groups of 10 or more. Individuals, couples and small groups of under 10 people, are accommodated in the guesthouse.
Guests staying in the guesthouse or the hostel are required to show proof of vaccination on entry and in the event of unforeseen COVID restrictions, alternative dates can be arranged, or a full refund will be provided.
